Built in the early 1900s, "The Old Salt" is named for George Gundlach, a previous owner and one of the original Old Salts of the Lakeside Sailing Center.
George, a sailor himself who spent hours jibing and tacking on his sailboat "Halcyon," helped to start classes for young Lakeside sailors, setting the stage for the Society of Old Salts
Built in the early 1900s, "The Old Salt" is named for George Gundlach, a previous owner and one of the original Old Salts of the Lakeside Sailing Center.
George, a sailor himself who spent hours jibing and tacking on his sailboat "Halcyon," helped to start classes for young Lakeside sailors, setting the stage for the Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.), the advocates for waterfront fun.
Seven generations of the Gundlach Family enjoyed Lakeside for decades. George and his wife Orel passed the property down to their daughter Chris, who sold the cottage to friends and neighbors Mike and Brenda Haas (December 2022).
The cottage's vintage charm, including fully refinished wood floors throughout, features local-centric historical photography, paintings, antiques and nautical decor collected over the years by the Gundlach and Haas families.

Mike Haas is a patent attorney and the current President of the Society of Old Salts. He and his wife Brenda, who writes for Leisure Living Magazine and serves as a Trustee with Ottawa County Community Foundation, purchased "The Old Salt" in December 2022.

Mike and Brenda met in Lakeside the summer of 1989. His family owned "The Upper Shelf" gift store (now called Marilyn's), and she was a "Gate Ambassador" before that was even a title. They married at the Hotel Lakeside in 1992. Both of their children were raised as avid Lakeside lovers and sailors.
The Haas' have been married for more than 30 years. They raised their family in Pittsburgh, PA, and purchased a year-round cottage in Lakeside in 2018. Joey, their Australian Shepherd, loves meeting other pups, doing tricks, long walks, and Lakeside sunsets.
